Curriculum

Nhill Lutheran School offers a learning program that caters for the educational needs of each child.  We know each student is a unique individual with personal learning needs, and we provide engaging learning opportunities to help our students grow.  Staff participate in ongoing professional learning in all curriculum areas.

Our curriculum aligns with the requirements of the Victorian Curriculum.  Christian Studies is taught following the Christian Studies Curriculum Framework used in Australian Lutheran Schools.  The key learning areas are:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Languages (Karen)
  • The Arts (Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music, Visual Arts)
  • The Humanities (History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship, Economics and Business)
  • Technologies (Design and Technologies, Digital Technologies)
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Christian Studies

Literacy and Numeracy growth

Nhill Lutheran School recognises that all children are readers and writers.  Through a phonics based approach, our students learn to become independent readers and writers, developing a love of the many forms and uses of language.  Students learn to listen to, read, speak, write and create a range of multimodal texts.

We aim to develop the competencies of our budding mathematicians as connections are made between mathematical concepts and the real world.  Students grow their understanding and skills in number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability.

Christian Studies

Christian Studies is a key learning area where students explore the strands of Christian Church, Christianity in the World, Christian Beliefs and Christian Living.

Specialist lessons

Nhill Lutheran School students access specialised learning in the areas of Physical Education, Technologies, The Arts (Music and Drama), and the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program.  Additionally, students learn the Karen language and about Karen culture with the assistance of a member of the local Karen community.
